Met Office issues warning as snow and ice forecast in Derbyshire

Parts of Derbyshire could be hit by sleet or snow showers overnight from Monday (January 6), causing disruption, especially to travel. The Met Office issued a yellow warning for snow and ice from 5pm on Monday until 10 am today (Tuesday, January 7).

The forecaster predicted frequent sleet or snow showers could produce snow accumulations of up to 2-4cm in places above 200m. However, the Met Office stated that snow could form at lower levels. In the Peak District, some areas could see as much as 5-10cm of snow above 300m.

The Met Office warning also said: “Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls.

“If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads, which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated.”

“Snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous. Keep yourself and others safe by planning your route and giving yourself extra time for your journey. Check for road closures or delays to public transport and amend plans if necessary.”

Temperatures are predicted to remain cold at around -2C throughout the day before reaching -3C at around 5pm tonight, when more snow is predicted. Despite this, the temperature might feel colder than it actually is, with the forecaster predicting that it could feel its coldest at around 5pm at -10C.

The weather warning has been issued for the west of the UK, including large parts of the West Midlands, Wales, South West England, North West England, London and the South East, and parts of Derbyshire. The cold temperatures are predicted to continue for the remainder of the week until Friday, January 10. Temperatures gradually rise towards the weekend, with temperatures on Sunday reaching 4C.
