Met Office issues new 24-hour snow warning for 12 places in Scotland as winter misery continues

Snow and ice in Scotland are to continue for at least another 24 hours after the Met Office issues a fresh weather alert. The country has already faced days of wintery conditions with the west coast and northern half of the country worst hit.

A yellow weather alert had been due to run out at noon on Tuesday, January 7. But forecasters have confirmed a new warning which will start at the same time running until 12pm on Wednesday, January 8.

It covers almost exactly the same area as the warning that runs from 4pm on Monday until 12pm on Tuesday. Scotland has faced constant weather warnings for snow and ice since the weekend with only a few places spared.

Up to 10cm of snow could fall on ground over 200 metres on Tuesday and Wednesday with 5cm falling elsewhere. Temperatures will also take a tumble with lows of -12C predicted in some parts.

The Met Office said: “Snow showers will continue for the rest of Monday and into Tuesday morning bringing further accumulations of 2 to 5 cm in places, and 5 to 10 cm above 200 metres across northern Scotland. Showers will initially fall as rain or sleet at lower levels this evening, and across the Northern Isles at times throughout, leading to a risk of icy stretches.”

The weather warning covers:

  • Aberdeen
  • Aberdeenshire
  • Moray
  • Na h-Eileanan Siar
  • Highland
  • Orkney Islands
  • Shetland Islands
  • Dumfries and Galloway
  • Argyll and Bute
  • East Ayrshire
  • North Ayrshire
  • South Ayrshire

According to the Met Office, longer journey times are likely on roads and railways. Icy patches are ‘probable’ on untreated roads and pavements where injuries could occur from falls.

The cold weather is expected to last until the weekend when warmer air from the Atlantic will take over.
