Met Office issues new 18-hour weather warning as temperatures plummet

The Met Office has issued a fresh weather warning as temperatures plummet. A yellow warning for ice comes into force at 4pm on New Year’s Day and remains in place until 10am on Thursday, January 2.

The warning covers Gwynedd, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham. The 18-hour warning comes after people in North Wales awoke to flooding across the region on New Year’s Day.

Torrential downpours led to road closures and public transport delays across the region. You can get all the latest updates on these issues here.

After issuing the latest weather warning, a Met Office spokesperson said: “A band of rain, sleet and hill snow will clear southwards during Wednesday afternoon and evening. As skies clear in its wake, and with standing water following earlier rain in places, ice is likely to form quite quickly on untreated surfaces, leading to difficult travel conditions.

“Wintry showers are also likely along some north-facing coasts overnight, increasing the chance of ice in places.” The Met Office said people should expect icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, and some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

The Met Office warned temperatures were set to drop below freezing overnight in some parts of North Wales, and would remain in the low single figures on Thursday. They said there could also be wintry showers on Thursday, especially on Anglesey and in Gwynedd and Pembrokeshire.
