Met Office issues 15-hour yellow weather warning

The Met Office has issued a 15-hour yellow weather warning for parts of the country. The warning for fog, which is in place from 8pm this evening (January 15) until 11am tomorrow (January 16) warns of difficult travel conditions.

Forecasters at the Met Office have warned that the heavy fog will cause slower journey times, with delays to road and rail services possible. They also added that there is a chance flights will be delayed or cancelled.

Some areas within the weather warning will see fog develop throughout tonight into tomorrow morning. Some may see dense patches of fog with visibility below 100m.

Some patches of fog may lift by 6am tomorrow morning, but forecasters have warned that in southwest England it may persist. The weather warning is expected to affect Bristol, Gloucestershire, North Somerset, North East Somerset and Devon.

Temperatures are also expected to remain low over the next few days. There will be highs of just 8°C and lows of 3°C, so there is a risk of frost developing overnight too.

When there is heavy fog, driving becomes harder and more dangerous. Foggy conditions make it difficult to see the road ahead, but there are a number of things you can do to be prepared.

  • Make sure you know where your fog light switch is before you set off.
  • Keep a bigger distance between you and the car in front
  • Be prepared for a sudden bank of fog or drifting, patchy fog
  • Check your mirrors and slow down before entering fog
  • Use fog lights when visibility drops below 100 metres, which is roughly the length of a football pitch
  • Don’t use full beam as fog reflects the light back
  • Once the fog has lifted switch off your fog lights

South West weather forecast:
