Commuters are facing difficult driving conditions across Northern Ireland on Wednesday evening as a blanket of freezing fog impacts the region.
The Met Office have issued a further yellow weather warning for the whole of Northern Ireland which is in place until 9am tomorrow. This is in addition to another yellow weather warning for snow and ice which had been issued for parts of Co Antrin, Co Derry, Co Tyrone and Co Fermanagh earlier and which remains in place until 11am tomorrow.
The forecaster has said that the freezing fog is expected to become more extensive and thicken across Northern Ireland this evening and overnight, with visibility falling to less than 100 m in places. Once formed the fog may well persist into Thursday morning. Some icy patches will also develop on untreated surfaces bringing an additional hazard.
“Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary,” they said.
“Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush, reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls. If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated.
“Be prepared for weather warnings to change: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”
The Met Office has also warned that this could cause disruption to public transport and delays to flights.
