Met Eireann has announced a Status Orange low temperature and ice warning for 22 counties as the latest development in the current cold snap unfolds.
The warning, which was issued on Tuesday morning, comes into effect at 8pm on Tuesday night and will stay in effect until 10am on Wednesday.
A separate Status Orange low temperature and ice warning will come into effect on Wednesday at 6pm for all counties excluding Donegal until 11am on Thursday.
Met Eireann has warned that extremely cold conditions will lead to dangerous travelling conditions on roads and underfoot, travel disruption and delays and animal welfare issues.
Met Éireann’s Deputy Head of Forecasting Liz Coleman stated:
“This prolonged cold spell will bring very hazardous conditions over the next few days with no real opportunity for melt of significant lying snow. Given there has been a lot of snow over the weekend, as well as rain which has now frozen, there will be really dangerous conditions on the roads.
“The icy conditions will be particularly impactful for some road users, such as cyclists and motorcyclists, so alternative travel should be considered if possible.”
While some social media users earlier this week were critical of Met Eireann’s Status Yellow warning because their areas weren’t majorly impacted, a weather expert has warned that what we are about to see is not ordinary.
