Message to householders after council bin crews leave paper and cardboard uncollected

Birmingham City Council has apologised after bin lorries failed to empty the recycling bins in some parts of the city today. The cardboard and paper section was uncollected on Thursday morning (January 2) due to “operational reasons.”

Affected residents are advised to leave their bins out for collection on Friday when bin crews will return to finish the job.

Birmingham City Council posted on X: “Due to operational reasons, we’ve been unable to collect cardboard and paper recycling in some areas of the city today (2nd January).

“If you have been affected, please leave your recycling bin out for collection, and we’ll return it tomorrow. Apologies for any inconvenience.”

Meanwhile, as the bin crews catch up on missed rounds due to the festive season, the first in a series of strikes is planned to start on Monday (January 6). The bin strikes were announced after crunch talks over pay broke down between Unite, the union representing refuse workers, and Birmingham City Council.

From today, (January 2) an overtime ban will be in place as well as a ‘work to rule’ which will mean workers adhering to official start and finish times and returning to the work yard for their 15-minute break and 30 minute lunch period.

The strike action is planned for 12 days in 2025 – including four in January straight after Christmas and New Year. The dates are:
