So what is Mercury retrograde? Basically it is a phenomenon where the planet appears to move backward in its orbit, an illusion caused by Earth overtaking it. In astrology, this period is believed to create chaos in areas ruled by Mercury, such as communication, travel and technology.
“Mercury retrograde isn’t inherently bad – it’s just a time when things may not go as planned,” explains astrologer Palmist Ankur. “Being aware of it allows you to navigate the energy with caution.”
He added: “Now Mercury is the closest to the Sun and thus the fastest orbiting planet in our solar system, so it enters retrograde, too, quite frequently, around three to four times in a year.”

Here are the three Mercury retrograde periods for the upcoming year, and what to watch out for during each interval.
March 14 and April 8, 2025, coincides with Neptune’s transition from Pisces to Aries and an eclipse. According to Ankur “these overlapping events could increase the likelihood of accidents, especially involving air or sea travel”. Mars in Cancer – a challenging placement – further intensifies the energy.
Diplomatic miscommunications or international tensions could be sparked with Saturn and Neptune aligning tightly in Aries, during the retrograde between July 17 and August 11, 2025. Ankur predicts: “Expect heightened travel delays and potential breakdowns in foreign relations.”

Mercury opposing Uranus during November 9 and November 30, 2025, suggests disruptions in technology and even seismic activity. “This is a time to back up your data and brace for possible natural events,” says Ankur.
And with all these potential disruptions, Ankur advises taking the following precautions during retrograde periods:
- Double-check everything: Whether it’s travel plans or contracts, review the details carefully
- Avoid starting new ventures: Focus on completing existing projects instead
- Expect the unexpected: Be flexible and prepared for delays or changes in plans
While Mercury retrograde can bring its share of frustrations, Ankur emphasises the potential for growth. “These periods push us to slow down and reflect,” he says. “It’s a time to tie up loose ends and rediscover what brings us joy.”
