An affectionate dog who was found wandering an Edinburgh park is looking for her forever home.
Luna, who is thought to be around seven-years-old, was spotted in Pilrig Park on her own a year and a half ago. She was brought to the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, who are now looking to place her with a loving family.
Having been unable to find a chip, or her owners, she’s been living at the home for around 400 days. This isn’t because they can’t find her a forever family, but because she had so many health issues when she was found that it’s taken some time for her to get back in shape.
Despite her struggles, Luna is an incredibly sweet dog – and won’t waste time in making friends with people. Jamie Simpson, director of people and services at the home, says she’d had ‘quite a journey’.
Jamie told Edinburgh Live: ”Luna came to us about a year and a half ago.
“She was a stray, so we didn’t have a huge amount of veterinary history or ownership. We knew she was about seven-years-old.

“She was brought to us by a member of the public, who found her in Pilrig Park. She had a number of ailments that can be related to the breed.
“Nobody wants to see animals coming in a terrible state. You don’t want to see the things you see in adverts in real life.
“Bull breeds can be quite susceptible to skin conditions, under their bellies and their armpits – as well as ear conditions. We also do a lot of work with enrichment, Luna was probably living in a home with a comfy sofa and things so we do a lot to try and make things as nice as we can for dogs like her.
“They can be aggravated by stress, which can be elevated in a kennel with 50 other dogs. We don’t put an animal up for rehoming until we’re absolutely sure we’ve got any conditions under control, so it’s been a bit of a journey.”

The centre’s in-house vet, Bridget, keeps all the animals in good health. She ensure the ‘top level of care’ for each pet, and has been with Luna since her arrival.
The home have an ‘extremely thorough’ rehoming process, and pride themselves on being upfront with families about the challenges that come with specific dogs. For Luna, she would need an experienced owner who has had a strong dog before, and plenty of company while she settles in.
She would also need to be the only pet in the house, and would be able to live with teenagers but not children.

Jamie told us: “We need someone who isn’t going to be intimidated when she’s being friendly and jumping on you.
“She is very strong! Maye somewhere with a garden as well, so she can get outside without having to worry about other dogs.”
While the team want the best for Luna, they’re expecting an emotional goodbye when she finds her family. Jamie said: “When a longer resident like Luna leaves it is tough.

“It might be after Christmas by the time she goes, and it’ll be a long time that she’s lived here. We’ll be sad to see her go, but it’s a moment of celebration as well.
“You will literally have all the staff coming out to see her go and wave her off.”
