Meet the cast of Lockerbie A Search for Truth from Oscar winner to Shetland star

Acclaimed actor Colin Firth takes centre stage in a heart-wrenching drama centred on the devastating Lockerbie disaster, titled Lockerbie: A Search for Truth.

In this five-part series, Firth portrays Dr. Jim Swire, who becomes a voice for the victims’ families as he delves into the tragic plane crash that claimed 270 lives in the Scottish town. The series offers a deeply personal story of a man, a husband, and a father who risks everything in honour of his daughter Flora’s memory and in relentless pursuit of truth and justice.

Lockerbie: A Search for Truth is set to premiere on Sky Atlantic on January 2, 2025, and will also be available for viewing on NOW in the UK and Ireland.

Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth steps into the shoes of Dr Jim Swire, a doctor and family man who becomes a key spokesperson for the victims’ families following the explosion of Flight 103, which took the life of his daughter, Flora.

Firth, an Oscar recipient for his portrayal of King George VI in ‘The King’s Speech’, has an impressive filmography that includes the ‘Kingsman’ films, ‘Pride and Prejudice’, the ‘Bridget Jones’ series, ‘A Single Man’, ‘1917’, and ‘Operation Mincemeat’.

Catherine McCormack as Jane Swire

Jane Swire is portrayed by Catherine McCormack, who has appeared in Braveheart, Temple and Slow Horses. She is wife of Jim Swire and mother to Flora, Jane joined her husband in the fight for justice and answers in the 35-year investigation that unfolded after the Lockerbie bombing.

Sam Troughton takes on the role of Murray Guthrie, a fictional local journalist who is quick to arrive at the scene in the first episode. Troughton comes from a family of actors; his brother is The Archers star William Troughton, and his grandfather is Patrick Troughton the second actor to play Doctor Who.

His acting credits include Litvinenko, Vera Drake, Hex, and The Lazarus Project.

Mark Bonnar as Roderick McGill

Scottish actor Mark Bonnar plays Roderick McGill. Bonnar’s early career saw him in one-off roles in renowned crime dramas such as Taggart, Rebus, and Wire In The Blood, with later roles in Shetland, Guilt, The Rig, Litvinenko, and Operation Mincemeat.

Ardalan Esmaili as Abdulbaset al-Megrahi

Abdulbaset al-Megrahi, one of the two men accused of the Lockerbie bombing, is played by Ardalan Esmaili. A Libyan national suspected of being an intelligence agent, his arrest and subsequent trial became an international issue, even involving the United Nations.

Despite being found guilty, al-Megrahi maintained his innocence throughout his life. Esmaili has previously appeared in Grey Zone and Deliver Me.

Muda Abbara as Al Amin Khalifa Fhimah

Muda Abbara takes on the role of Al Amin Khalifa Fhimah in the series. Initially identified as one of the terrorists behind the Lockerbie bombing, Fhimah was later acquitted and allowed to return home.

Abbara’s previous acting credits include The Swimmers and In Another Life.

Guy Henry as Paul Channon

Guy Henry portrays Paul Channon, the Secretary of State for Transport under the Conservative government at the time of the Lockerbie bombing. He faced heavy criticism from Labour MP John Prescott for choosing to holiday with his family shortly after the attack.

Henry is known for his roles in Holby City, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the Harry Potter films, and Extras.

Nabil Al Raee as Colonel Gaddafi

Colonel Gaddafi is played by Nabil Al Raee, who also starred in The Teacher and 200 Meters. Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi was a Libyan politician and revolutionary, who ruled over Libya from 1969.
