Maya Jama weighed in on Macy Gray’s dramatic exit from The Masked Singer, after she was ousted as Toad in the Hole. Dressed as a Yorkshire pudding, the 57 year old ‘I Try’ singer didn’t hang around for the usual unveil when she discovered she was leaving the show.
A surprised Maya, 30, shared the clip on her Instagram, captioning it with a quip as Gray marched past the bewildered host Joel Dommett: “Me at any minor inconvenience” The Love Island presenter is then seen with a shocked expression, commenting to co-judge Jonathan Ross:”Toad’s off!”, in reaction to Gray’s departure. Gray sparked an online storm with her exit which left producers to taking almost an hour to persuade her back on stage for her proper send-off and final performance.
As Joel announced Toad in the Hole as the third celebrity to be booted off, the ‘I’ve Committed Murder’ singer chose not to stick around for the big reveal and left the set promptly instead. An eyewitness from the recording session confided to The Sun that Macy was “totally blindsided”, adding: “When Macy stormed off stage everyone was frozen in shock but as soon as she reached backstage, crew removed her mask so they could talk her down,” the source disclosed. Macy was reportedly left stunned by her early elimination, a source said: “Macy was almost shellshocked to start with and was basically gutted to be out so early because she really enjoyed being on the American version – when obviously she did brilliantly – she was totally blindsided. It was the shock of it for her as well as the upset and in that moment she had a very raw, human reaction and wanted out.”
Discussing the incident on his BBC Radio 2 show, Joel offered his perspective saying Macy shouldn’t be too disheartened: “It’s sort of a singing show but it’s also sort of a guessing show – so it kind of doesn’t really sit in either camp.”, reports the Mirror.
But he said format could work against you: “And also if you’re a great singer and you make it through then that’s absolutely wonderful, but sometimes, like the case with Macy Gray, she has such a recognisable voice and she’s a legend so you immediately know who it is. So it’s kind of one of those where we all know who it is, she might as well go and then the other person can go through as we don’t quite know who they are. So the guessing game continues.”
Adding a touch of humour, Joel told Paddy McGuinness that there’s always a silver lining: “The funny thing is, I think it’s a win win scenario on that game – whether you go through to the final it’s a win as you’re winning it. But also if you go home early it’s a win because you get to go early and you get the same money.”
Macy Gray
Macy also stirred up trouble on the Australian edition of the contest three years earlier as ‘Atlantis’, where after an elimination, she allegedly refused to leave the stage.
Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes, one of the judges on the Australian version of The Masked Singer, revealed that when it was time for singer Macy Gray to be unmasked and leave the show, she “Macy also caused chaos on the Australian version of the programme three years ago. Dressed up as ‘Atlantis’, Macy was eliminated again, but reportedly refused to leave the stage. One of the Aussie show’s judges, Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes, said when the singer was unmasked, she ‘refused to leave’ despite being told it was time to take off her mask and say goodbye. If you can’t see the poll, click hereHe told 2Day FM’s Morning Crew: “.

Speaking to 2Day FM’s Morning Crew, Hughesy said: “Macy Gray had such passion for The Masked Singer that when she was told that she had to leave the show, which you saw last night, she refused to leave the show. She said: ‘No, I’m continuing in the show,’ and there had to be a discussion which went for quite a while as to: ‘No, you have to leave.’ She said: ‘No, I’m not leaving.'” Co-host Erin Molan speculated that the singer might have wanted to stay longer on the show to secure a larger payday.
Hughesy responded by saying he wasn’t sure about the contractual situation, but added that it took a lot of convincing before Macy agreed to take off her mask and leave.
