Last month, Maura revealed she ‘nearly passed out’ at a Galway theatre as she shared the story with her followers.

Like many of us, the Today presenter was back home for Christmas and while looking through old photos, took a trip down memory lane.

During her search, the Aran Islands native came across an old newspaper clipping from her days treading the boards as a young actress at the Taibhdhearc Theatre in Galway.

Reminiscing about her first time on stage, she said the prospect of the spotlight saw her ‘nearly pass out’ on opening night.

However, getting through her fear that night allowed the talented RTE star to reach the career heights she has come to nearly thirty years later.

The memory made the presenter laugh as she shared it with her followers on social media.

In a post on Instagram with the photo she explained: “Every time I come home to Inis Mór, I find a memory my mother has kept from many moons ago. She showed me this newspaper clipping the other day, which she kept from 1995, when I launched my acting career!

“It’s a play from the Taibhdhearc Theatre in Galway. I had just started working on television at the time, but has such a fear of cameras and public speaking that I decided I had to do something to get over it. Facing my fears on stage seemed like the best way to do it.

“I seriously nearly passed out of the opening night, not just from the flu, but seeing actual humans in the audience. But it was exhilarating at the same time.

“And it worked! It help me face the camera and continue working in this industry since. Facing our fears is the only way!”
