Massive new The Range Superstore to open in Leicester after company buys DIY chain

Leicester’s Homebase is to be turned into a The Range Superstore. It comes after the Homebase brand and up to 70 of its stores were bought by CDS Superstores, which owns The Range and Wilko.

The shop, in Putney Road, Freemen’s Common, is one of a number of outlets which will be called The Range Superstore, the company announced this morning (Thursday, January 16). CDS said the new store would combine elements of The Range and Homebase, including its garden centre.

The firm said it aimed to open 10 new outlets a month, eventually rebranding up to 70 Homebase locations. It said it had “prioritised” retaining or transferring Homebase staff.

Rebranded stores are also opening in Glasgow, Bournemouth, Birmingham, Newton Abbot, Felixstowe, Stroud and Blyth. They and the Leicester branch will officially open on Friday, January 31, the company said.

Alex Simpkin, chief executive of CDS Superstores, said: “We’re fully committed to retaining the best of Homebase’s heritage while introducing the broader product range and value that customers expect from us as The Range. We’re also eager to help consumers nationwide by investing in the Homebase brand with the relaunch of www.homebase.co.uk and expect to have this platform live to support families in all of their home improvement endeavours very soon.”
