Massive new retail warehouse set to open in Plymouth

A surf gear business is to open a huge out-of-town store in Plymouth six years after quitting the city centre. Mango Surfing shut its shop at the foot of the Money Centre in the spring of 2019 complaining that the high street was “dying” in Plymouth.

But next month it will open an enormous warehouse store at an industrial estate in Estover. The business said on social media: “This is a huge deal for us. There’s so much going on in this space, it’s been a labour of love and a return to where we started, with a hardware focussed store in Plymouth.”

The new Plymouth outlet, in Sisna Park Road, will have nearly 1,000 surfboards, plus clothing and wetsuits. Mango Surfing said: “We will announce our opening day in the new year, but rest assured the fridge will be full of beers for you to enjoy… just like the old days in our first Plymouth store.”

Mango Surfing traded in the city centre for more than two years before pulling out. At the time it blamed the exit on a “multitude of problems” including people using the front of the shop as a toilet, receiving parking tickets when unloading and the “death” of city centre retail.

The business was, however, a success and entrenched at its Cornwall base in St Austell where it expanded.

At the new Plymouth warehouse, Mango Surfing will house the Co.Lab Surf Studios south coast showroom offering McCallum, Love Machine and Fourth surf boards. It will be one of only a few UK stockists of Sharp Eye Surfboards and will have a range of Firewire Surfboards.

Mango Surfing said: “We are the UK exclusive McCoy surfboard store, and have a huge offering of Aloha and Elemnt surfboards and Mick Fanning soft boards. In total there’s almost 1,000 boards on display, fun boards, longboards, soft boards and short boards to suit all budgets and abilities. And that’s just the surfboards.”

The warehouse will also contain a showroom for Yeti snowboards and Super73 electric bikes, and will sell wetsuits, fins and “a huge selection of other hardware”. On social media the company said: “There is a large clearance clothing area and we are really excited to launch our new yard sale area – new and nearly new area of bargains. Think slightly scratched cool boxes at 40% off, clothes and wetsuits used for photo shoots at half price, returns and graded second hand items at a fraction of the original rrp.

“We have two residential spaces which will house a pop-up store for various brands. Each lasting eight weeks. Each brand makes their space their own and only gets the space if they can offer our customers a little something extra. It’s taken a lot longer to launch than we hoped but it’s worth the wait.”

Just this week Mango Surfing said it would also have a Mystic wetsuit installation and said: “We are super stoked to announce our partnership with wetsuit specialists Mystic who are fast becoming one of the most dominant brands in the UK. Mystic wetsuits, born from the cold waters of the North Sea, offer exceptional durability and warmth, making them ideal for cold water surfing and extreme conditions.

“Mystic also offers a fantastic range of high quality boots, gloves, dry bags and dry robes. We’ve pulled together some of our favourite products from the range which you can view now on our online blog.

“You can check out the full range of wetsuits and accessories on our website and soon at the Plymouth warehouse. We also hold a small selection of Mystic wetsuits at our Cornwall Services store.”
