Man rushed to hospital and emergency services called after horror sledging incident

A man was rushed to hospital after a horror sledging incident in Bury on Sunday (January 5). Paramedics and fire crews were called to the incident on Stockton Drive, in Tottington, due to the incident behind the residential street on the nearby Kirklees Brook.

Witnesses said a number of emergency services vehicles lined the road after the incident, understood to have happened as families were out sledging on the snow.

Heavy snow fell across Greater Manchester on Sunday morning as the region was covered by two severe weather warnings, which saw much of the region wake up to their streets blanketed in the white stuff.

The man, whose age has not been confirmed, was rescued using specialist equipment after ‘falling down the large slope’ at around 1.30pm. Emergency crews were in attendance for an hour and a half before the man was treated by paramedics. The nature of his injuries have not yet been confirmed.

An amber snow and ice warning was in put in force across Greater Manchester from 6pm on Saturday (January 4) until 12pm on Sunday (January 5), with a second amber warning for snow remaining in place until 11.59pm on Sunday, covering much of northern England.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Shortly after 1:30pm this afternoon (Sunday 05 January), three fire engines from Bury, Whitefield and Bolton Fire Stations, along with the Technical Response Unit from Ashton were called to reports of a person needing rescue after falling down a large slope near Stockton Drive, Bury”

“Crews arrived quickly and used specialist rescue equipment to bring the person to safety. They have been transferred to the care of North West Ambulance Service.”

“Firefighters were in attendance for around an hour and a half.”

The North West Ambulance Service have been approached for details.
