Man appears in court over alleged Plymouth Co-op robbery

A man accused of a knifepoint robbery of a convenience store has been remanded into custody by magistrates.

Declan Clarke, aged 26, was arrested by armed police officers on Mutley Plain following an incident at the Co-operative store on Mutley Plain at around 4.20pm on December 30. He is alleged to have entered the store, filled a shopping basket with cheese and then attempted to leave.

However, when confronted by shop staff Clarke, of Citadel Road, is alleged to have pulled out a knife and threatened staff before he finally left the store.

Armed response officers were called to the scene and at around 4.30pm Clarke allegedly surrendered himself.

Following his arrest, he was taken to Charles Cross police station custody suite for interview before being charged with robbery and possession of a bladed article. In addition he was charged with one matter of shoplifting on October 8, 2024 and a further shoplifting matter on November 19, 2024, with both alleged incidents taking place at the Sainsbury’s store on Armada Way.

Clarke appeared at Plymouth Magistrates’ Court on January 1, 2025 and was remanded into custody until February 3, whereupon he will appear at Plymouth Crown Court for a plea hearing.
