Major Glasgow roadworks cut crucial city centre route to one lane for eight weeks

One of the main routes through Glasgow city centre will be reduced to one lane for eight weeks as ‘essential’ repairs are carried out.

Hope Street will be reduced to one lane between West George Street and West Regent Street, outside The Pot Still, from Monday (January 6). Works will continue into March 2025 and pavements and businesses will be open as usual.

Traffic management will be in place and delays are expected in the area. Scottish Water is carrying out works to repair sewers under Hope Street.

Engineers said the sewers under Hope Street are seeing ‘internal flooding’. West Regent Lane will be closed to all vehicles between Renfield Street and Hope Street.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “The work is urgently needed to address internal sewer flooding and we will do all that we can to carry it out as quickly and safely as possible.

“We appreciate it is going to be inconvenient for people living in and travelling through the city centre, but this really is the only way we can carry out the repair safely.

“We will work with affected businesses and residents to minimise the impact of the works and we would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding.”
