M5 and M6 drivers warned of ‘major disruption’ as crash blocks Birmingham route

The M5 northbound was partially blocked this morning due to a crash, which is having a knock-on effect on the M6. Birmingham drivers have been warned of “major disruption” after the crash on the M5 northbound between junction J1 and the M6, which occurred just after 10:30am on Saturday morning.

Live traffic system INRIX confirmed that all traffic was initially held for 15 minutes, but released shortly after. The incident was cleared at 11:15am, however there is congestion on the route, which is impacting the M5 northbound link road to the M6.

National Highways warned that there were delays of 20 minutes but traffic conditions should return to normal after 11am. Traffic cameras showed queues at the scene.

The latest update from INRIX warned at 11:15am: “Road cleared and traffic easing, accident cleared on M5 Northbound from J1 A4252 Kenrick Way (West Bromwich / Birmingham) to the M6 interchange. Sensors indicate the road is partially open after a hold of around 15 minutes.

West Midlands Roads also took to X, formerly Twitter, to warn West Midlands drivers of “major disruption.” A post warned: “M5 north link to M6 south. Lane closure, traffic incident.

“Delays of around 30+ minutes.” The incident cleared by 11:15am but residual traffic remained.
