A former restaurant property on one of Cork’s busiest city centre streets is to be turned into new apartments.
Cork City Council gave permission this week for Chimera Ltd for the development of the protected structures at 38 and 39 Washington Street for residential use.
The ground floor of the two properties is interconnected and was most recently in use as Flame, a once-popular ‘street food’ restaurant which has been closed for over five years. Since the Asian-fusion food spot closed in 2019, it has sat vacant and has fallen into disrepair over the years.

The Council has granted permission for four 1-bed apartments and one 2-bed apartment.
The property has Protected status and dates back to the 19th Century. The terraced two-bay four-storey houses were built around 1840 and have most recently been in use as retail/restaurant outlets on the ground floor with residential accommodation on the upper floors.
The developers have promised to deliver “high-quality apartments within the metropolitan area of Cork City, which will make use of currently vacant units.”
In the Cork City development plan, the city centre is under Zone 5, which aims to develop and promote the city as a “dynamic mixed-use centre for community, economic, civil, cultural and residential growth.”
The plan outlines that “apartments will become increasingly important to the housing market with the compact growth priority to provide half of new homes within the existing built-up areas.”
