Liverpool life in 1975 captured in 40 photos from 50 years ago

The New Year has begun and many of us are already looking forward to all 2025 has to offer. But as we embark on a new year – and are now mid-way through the decade – we’ve decided to take a look back at what life was like in the city decades ago.

So far, we’ve taken a look at Liverpool life in 1995, as well as in 1985. And now, we’re going back one decade further to share brilliant images of our city back in 1975.

For context, 1975 was the year One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was released as a film, the world heard hit song Fame by David Bowie for the first time and celebrities Pedro Pascal and Angelina Jolie were born. For many, it’s hard to believe 1975 was half a century ago – but these images are bound to stir some memories.

Taken throughout that year, these images show what was happening in the city that year, from the businesses who called Liverpool home and of course, the people. Here, you may spot someone you recognise or remember the city as it looked at one moment in time.
