Live updates as key Cheshire roads under water as county battered by heavy rain

Motorists are being warned that some key Cheshire roads have been shut off due to flooding across the county. It comes after heavy rain swept in on New Year’s Eve and continued for chunks of January 1.

The conditions resulted in homes being evacuated as emergency services were scrambled to scores of incidents across Cheshire. Today and while the conditions have dried up and given way to freezing temperatures some key roads have been shut off.

Currently the A34 in Nether Alderley is closed in both directions between Congleton Road and Wilmslow Road. In addition the A56 Lymm Road in Bollington is also shut in both directions, with that closure between Warrington Lane and Park Lane.

There have also been a number of roads shut off overnight. Police confirmed the following were shut last night:

  • A555 / B5358 Wilmslow Road Handforth underpass
  • A34 Melrose Way – Congleton Road to Pendleton Way
  • Styal Road, Wilmslow
  • Merryman’s Lane, Wilmslow
  • Smith Lane, Mobberley
  • Old Mill Lane, Sandbach
  • Woore Road, Audlem

Meanwhile Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service say since midnight heading into January 1, and firefighters responded to more than 40 separate flooding incidents across the county. CheshireLive reported how a number of flood warnings and alerts were in place yesterday.

The conditions also resulted in homes being evacuated in parts of the county while emergency services also had to help rescue stranded motorists.
