Somerset has been warned to brace for an influx of freezing temperatures amid a snowy forecast this weekend. Weather forecasters expect widespread travel disruption, injuries and power cuts today (Saturday, January 4) as low temperatures bring snow and ice to the region.
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for snow and ice from 12pm today until 11.59pm on Sunday. The forecaster warns: “Heavy snow, and some freezing rain in places, may cause some disruption over the weekend.”
Snow is set to arrive in Somerset later this afternoon, from around 3pm. These flurries will move and may grow heavier throughout the day, before a band of heavy rain moves in towards the evening.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has also issued an amber cold health alert which is in place until 12pm next Wednesday (January 8). Low temperatures are expected to put increased pressure on the health and social care sectors.
