Drivers are once again facing disruption to their journeys across Kent this morning (Tuesday, January 7) due to flooding along multiple key routes. Over the past weekend, the county endured freezing temperatures followed by heavy rains, and the odd flurry of snow and sleet.
On Sunday, a yellow weather warning for heavy rain was issued by the Met Office as downpours grew in intensity. Showers persisted until Monday morning, with some areas seeing downfalls in excess of 30mm/hr, leading to a notable rise in river levels throughout Kent.
Though conditions have since largely dried up, river levels are yet to drop meaning numerous flood alerts and warnings remain in effect. Flooding has been reported on several notable roads this morning, including Twyford Bridge and Lees Road in Yalding, Green Lane in Tonbridge and Ensfield Road in Leigh.
Where flood warnings and alerts are in place, the public has been advised to avoid low-lying roads and walkways. The Environment Agency has urged those in flood zones to: “Start acting on your flood plan if you have one. Activate any property flood protection products you may have.”
Though Tuesday is forecast to be predominantly dry, further rain showers are expected in the south east on Wednesday, January 8. Not only this, the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow which will come into effect tomorrow morning, blanketing all of Kent as wintery showers have been forecast in the south.
