It is another bitterly cold day across Co Galway and the rest of Ireland – ahead of what is forecasted to be the coldest night in some time, with temps in some parts of Munster to go as low as -8C tonight.
A Status Orange alert for Connacht and for most of the rest of Ireland has been issued this morning – the severe cold and ice warning comes into effect at 10am.
Several areas of the country were hit hard by snow overnight, particularly in the west and north-west, as the current icy spell continues.
Met Eireann has stated that daytime temperatures may not rise above zero degrees Celsius much in many areas for the rest of the week, meaning little to no respite from the frost and ice or melt of lying snow.
Mercy College in Woodford confirmed to social media: “Due to road conditions not improving and the temperature decreasing again tonight, we have made the decision to close Mercy College tomorrow (Wednesday). We will review the situation again Wednesday evening and into Thursday morning. Stay safe everyone!”
Galway FA also issued a statement that all games under their jurisdiction are called off until Friday pending further notice.
Some bus services in Co. Galway and many more across the country have been cancelled on Tuesday morning due to treacherous road conditions caused by heavy snow.
A deluge of snow in the west and north-west on Monday night has led to travel difficulties in many areas and the issue isn’t just a one off as Met Eireann has forecast several more days of below freezing conditons which will lead to icy roads.
Met Eireann are expected to issued a number of weather warnings through today – with the strong possibility of an Orange Cold warning from the National Forecaster before lunchtime.

The better news this very cold but bright morning is that the end is in sight – temps are expected to start climbing upwards from Friday ahead of milder weather ahead.
