Cold weather has hit Ireland hard this week as traffic and travel alerts are issued for several areas of the country including Galway.
Met Eireann has issued a double orange weather warning for counties across Ireland with Connacht set to be ‘extremely cold with widespread severe frost, ice and lying snow’.
The Low Temperature/Ice warning came into effect at 8pm on Tuesday and will remain in place until Wednesday morning at 10am before it will come back into place at 6pm until Thursday, January 9 at 11am.
The Status Orange – Low Temperature/Ice warning is in place for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow, Cavan, Monaghan, Munster and Connacht.
The worst of the snow will be away from coastal areas with up to 7cm likely in parts. Ireland’s Weather Channel is advising people who live in areas under an Orange warning to “only make necessary journeys and to check road conditions before heading out this evening.”
People across Galway have been told to take caution on the roads as conditions are expected to be dangerous over the next 24 hours.
