Schools, sports clubs and businesses are closing across Galway as the country endures extreme cold and heavy snowfall.
Several areas of the country were hit hard by snow overnight, particularly in the west and north-west, as the current icy spell continues.
Met Eireann has stated that daytime temperatures will struggle to rise above zero in many areas for the rest of the week, meaning little to no respite from the frost and ice or melt of lying snow.
Mercy College in Woodford confirmed to social media: “Due to road conditions not improving and the temperature decreasing again tonight, we have made the decision to close Mercy College tomorrow (Wednesday). We will review the situation again Wednesday evening and into Thursday morning. Stay safe everyone!”
Galway FA also issued a statement that all games under their jurisdiction are called off until Friday pending further notice.
Some bus services in Co. Galway and many more across the country have been cancelled on Tuesday morning due to treacherous road conditions caused by heavy snow.
A deluge of snow in the west and north-west on Monday night has led to travel difficulties in many areas and the issue isn’t just a one off as Met Eireann has forecast several more days of below freezing conditons which will lead to icy roads.
Donegal’s Weather Channel shared a photo of “the road conditions around the N17 near Knock Airport with big snowfall amounts in the Area. The road is close and not passable for HGVs”.

Meanwhile, TFI Locallink Galway stated: “Due to the weather conditions the route 1583 Portumna to Loughrea will be cancelled at 7:30am & 8:30am.”
Met Éireann’s Deputy Head of Forecasting Liz Coleman stated:
“This prolonged cold spell will bring very hazardous conditions over the next few days with no real opportunity for melt of significant lying snow. Given there has been a lot of snow over the weekend, as well as rain which has now frozen, there will be really dangerous conditions on the roads.
“The icy conditions will be particularly impactful for some road users, such as cyclists and motorcyclists, so alternative travel should be considered if possible.”
