LIVE: Galway road blocked after triple motorway incident as weather turns area lethal

Gardai and emergency services are attending the scene of the serious road traffic collision in Co Galway on Wednesday afternoon 8 January 2025.

The incident occurred along the M6 motorway near Oranmore and traffic has been hit hard as lanes are closed as Gardai deal with the scene. The three-car collision occurred along the M6 (eastbound) near junction 19 at around 2:30pm on Wednesday 8 January 2025.

Roads across Ireland are hazardous, even in areas which have been salted and gritted, with many weather and travel experts advising against unnecessary journeys.

The City Council confirmed that road conditions will be hazardous even on gritted roads so have urged motorists to drive slowly and be aware of other road users.

Cyclists need to exercise extreme caution during this cold weather spell. While key arterial routes are being gritted nightly, there are many cycle routes that may not be gritted. Drivers travelling longer journeys are advised to be aware of conditions right along their route, as the weather may vary significantly across different parts of the country.

Met Eireann has issued a double orange weather warning for counties across Ireland with Connacht set to be ‘extremely cold with widespread severe frost, ice and lying snow’.

The Low Temperature/Ice warning came into effect at 8pm on Tuesday and will remain in place until Wednesday morning at 10am before it will come back into place at 6pm until Thursday, January 9 at 11am.

The Status Orange – Low Temperature/Ice warning is in place for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow, Cavan, Monaghan, Munster and Connacht.

The worst of the snow will be away from coastal areas with up to 7cm likely in parts. Ireland’s Weather Channel is advising people who live in areas under an Orange warning to “only make necessary journeys and to check road conditions before heading out this evening.”
