The UK is braced for a snow and ice after a rare amber warning was issued for much of the country. The warning, which covers Merseyside, is in place from Saturday evening through until Sunday lunchtime, with heavy snow forecast for Liverpool during much of that period.
The latest hour-by-hour Met Office forecast for Liverpool on Saturday morning has several hours of heavy snow hitting from Saturday night. That’s expected to carry on until Sunday morning, turning to rain as the day progresses.
As temperatures are set to be around freezing, there is concern snow and rain could freeze and cause problems with ice on the roads. The Met Office said there are several things people can expect with the alert. These include; a good chance power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services – such as mobile phone coverage – there’s a good chance there will be travel delays, meaning some vehicles and passengers will become stranded, some road closures and longer journey times possible, some delays and cancellations to bus, rail and air travel are likely.
Forecasters also say there is a good chance that some rural communities could become cut off and untreated pavements and cycle paths are likely to be impassable. We’ll have the latest forecasts and updates throughout the weekend.
