If you’re looking to plan ahead and maximise your long weekends in 2025, here are the official dates for bank holidays this year.
Typically, England and Wales have eight bank holidays, with exceptions made under special circumstances. Scotland has nine, while Northern Ireland has ten.
In 2022, the UK had two additional bank holidays – one on June 3 to mark Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee, and another on September 19 for the Queen’s funeral. The UK once boasted 33 official holidays, mostly comprising saints days and religious celebrations.
However, in 1834 it was deemed excessive, and by 1871, the Bank Holidays Act had reduced this number and enshrined it into law. By law, every full-time worker in the UK is entitled to paid annual leave throughout the year, though the number of days varies.
The legal minimum for those working a five-day week is 28 days, reports the Manchester Evening News. If you plan your annual leave strategically around bank holidays, you could bag yourself a record number of days off. Here are all the bank holidays for England and Wales in 2025.
