Budget supermarket Lidl has reported ‘record’ sales over the festive period. While shoppers turned online more than in person for their Boxing Day Sales, the budget supermarket saw an increase in sales.
Lidl revealed that it has seen sales increase by 7 percent year on year. Turnover also went above the £1 billion mark in the four weeks up to December 24.
The supermarket has also increased its share of the grocery market in the UK in 2024. It has opened more locations, and was reported by industry analyst Kantar as the fastest growing bricks and mortar food retailer in the past quarter.
Now, Lidl is closing in on Morrisons to become the fifth-largest supermarket group in the UK. Speaking on January 2, Lidl UK said it had welcomed nearly two million more customers than before over the festive period – a key time of year for retailers.
The turnover saw sales of luxury goods increase, including a 25 percent rise in sales of champagne. Christmas staples were flying off the shelves too, with Lidl shifting eight million stuffing balls and 16 million pigs in blankets.
Party food also did well at Lidl over the festive season. Sales of the Partytime range rising by a whopping 32 percent.
However, the rise in sales was still slower than in previous years. The same period the year before, when food and drink inflation was higher, saw Lidl see sales increase by 12 percent.
Ryan McDonnell, chief executive officer at Lidl GB, said: “For three decades, Lidl has been providing households with access to unbeatable quality and value at Christmas.
“This year, we were thrilled to welcome more customers than ever before.
“Looking ahead, we’re excited to build on our momentum, growing our presence across the country and continuing to deliver the highest quality at the best prices on the market.”
