Leicestershire’s mystery knitter creates ‘tidy’ BBC Gavin and Stacey tribute

A mystery knitter has revealed it took two full days to create their woolly tribute to BBC’s Gavin and Stacey Christmas special. The crafted figures of characters Smithy and Nessa have appeared on a bollard in Syston’s shopping centre, attracting attention on social media.

The creation by Syston Knitting Banxy (SKB) appeared in the early hours of Monday morning (December 30) and celebrates the hit show’s Christmas Day episode, which drew in 12.3 million viewers. The final ever episode followed the 2019 cliffhanger when Nessa, played by Ruth Jones, proposed to Smithy, played by James Corden.

The anonymous artist told LeicestershireLive they were inspired to get creative after being “a huge fan” of the show “for years”. They described the finale as “wonderful” and “a satisfying conclusion to the love story of Nessa and Smithy.”

When asked about revealing their identity, SKB was clear about maintaining the mystery. “I intend to keep my identity anonymous forever… and a lot of people seem to enjoy that side of it,” they said.

The knitter added that the detailed tribute was “worth the time dedicated to it,” thanking people for “all the support of all those who enjoy and share the images”, and for the lovely comments they receive on social media.

The knitted creation is not the only Leicestershire link to the Gavin and Stacery finale either. During the 90-minute special, one county town got a surprising namecheck – and it delighted many it’s fair to say.
