Leicestershire village to get £1 million of ‘enhancements’ paid for by developers

A Leicestershire village is to get £1.1 million of upgrades paid for by developers who have built homes in the area. Great Glen, near Oadby, will see its 125-year-old village hall refurbished and the creation of a pavilion for social, sporting and leisure activities.

The money is coming from a pot of cash paid by developers to Harborough District Council (HDC) under what are known as Section 106 agreements. Such agreements are a standard part of the planning process. The money paid by developers is used to help mitigate the effects of developments on communities.

An HDC sub-committee considered a number of applications before settling on the two projects last month. The historic Great Glen Village Hall has received £369,410 to contribute to the cost of a refurbishment to bring it up to modern standards. Meanwhile, Great Glen Parish Council will use its award of £748,143 to create the sports and social centre.

Council leader Councillor Phil Knowles, who chairs the grants sub-committee, said: “Great Glen like all settlements in the Harborough district is somewhere favourable to live so I am pleased we are able to award this money to keep enhancing the village and its reputation for residents. I look forward to seeing these projects progress and benefit the community for years to come.”

Groups can apply for Section 106 funding, the district council said. Details of areas where funding is available can be found on the HDC website.
