While most of us are enjoying the festive season off with family and friends, some people will be at the start of new jail sentences. They include murderer Sindeep Singh, who kicked his mum out of her own home before murdering her in an attack that caused horrific injuries to her face and head. He will be behind bars until at least 2055.
Others locked up in December include a man armed with a knife, who chased another man into a Leicester city centre McDonald’s and stabbed him repeatedly in the head. Fortunately for Daniel Edgar, his victim survived. But he still has years behind bars ahead of him.
Meanwhile, a female sports coach, who sexually assaulted a younger woman more than 14 years ago, is also now behind bars. Justice caught up with Rosanna Awan earlier this year when she was convicted by a jury, leading to a lengthy sentence earlier this month.

Sindeep Singh
Sindeep Singh
A Leicester man “removed” his mother from her own home in the months before murdering her. The victim, 76-year-old Bhajan Kaur, had reported her son Sindeep Singh to the police for making threats to kill her in the months prior to her death.
In August 2023, police received a report that Singh had forced Mrs Kaur from her home, and she had gone to stay with relatives. Singh was arrested following allegations of coercive and controlling behaviour towards his mother. She returned to her house later that month, and the case was closed in November 2023 after “parties declined to provide statements”, and Mrs Kaur had requested withdrawing hers.
Singh was arrested again in early May 2024 and bailed to stay away from Mrs Kaur after she reported he had made threats to kill her.
On the evening of Monday, May 13, 2024, a 999 call was received by Leicestershire Police reporting the discovery of a body in a property in Bolsover Street, North Evington, Leicester . Mrs Kaur was found there, with “significant injuries” to her head and face. Singh, 48, had been seen leaving the property “within minutes of the call to police”.
Singh was found guilty of murdering his mum. He was given a mandatory life sentence, and will need to serve a minimum of 31 years behind bars before he can be considered for release.

Mitchell Williams
Pharmacy staff ran out screaming from an aggressive customer who pulled out a large knife before grabbing a variety of drugs from behind the counter. Mitchell Williams, who would later climb on the building’s roof, had gone into Vision Pharmacy in Leicester’s Narborough Road in August this year demanding drugs.
After staff refused to give him prescription medication he became agitated. Then when they tried to stop him getting behind the counter he became aggressive.
On a 999 call made by a male employee to the operator from Leicestershire Police, female staff members could be heard screaming after Williams pulled out the knife as the call was taking place.
In between talking to the operator the male pharmacy employee could be heard shouting to the other staff, “Everyone out, he has a knife”. After grabbing diazepam and other drugs from the pharmacy shelves, 25-year-old Williams went into the back, climbed the stairs in the building and went out onto the pharmacy’s roof.
The incident, which happened on Friday, August 16, led to Narborough Road, in the West End of Leicester, being completely closed to traffic while the officers and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service dealt with the incident. Police managed to get Williams to throw the knife from the roof, as well as a pair of scissors and other items before he was arrested.
Williams, previously of Pinfold Gate, Loughborough, has been in custody since the incident and also had 33 previous offences on his record, most of which invovled dishonesty and included the burglary of a pharmacy. In court, he pleaded guilty to robbery and having a knife in public and was jailed for 22 months.
