‘I’ve had near misses’ – OAP welcomes zebra crossing on this Stoke-on-Trent road

Families have welcomed the installation of a zebra crossing on a busy road. Residents in Blurton Road, Blurton, near the junction with Longton Hall Road, say crossing the road was dangerous and the crossing was needed to prevent accidents as cars and motorbikes travel too fast.

Janette Hicks, aged 70, who has lived in Blurton Road for more than 40 years, said: “I 100 per cent welcome Stoke-on-Trent City Council putting the zebra crossing here. It has been a long time coming.

“That particular corner, to cross the road, was horrendous. You are expected to look up the road, to the right and behind you. Cars come speeding down. They do not think of a pedestrian.

“The crossing was the sensible thing. I am not sure if it was the result of an incident. But it will be safer going to the shops or going for a bus. I have had a few near misses.”

Quinton Barratt, aged 53, of Blurton Road, said: “I have lived in Blurton all my life. They come screaming down the corner at the bottom of Longton Hall Road. The crossing should make it safer. I am glad the council has done something about it.”

Janette Hicks, aged 70, has welcomed a zebra crossing being installed in Blurton Road, Blurton.

Melody Salmon, aged 40, of Blurton Road, added: “I am happy with the zebra crossing, especially with the speed they come down this road. It is nice to know there is a safe place for people to cross. The Meadows School is just round the corner and it will be safer for children walking to and from school.”

Stoke-on-Trent City Council has installed the zebra crossing as part of moves to improve safety.

Councillor Finlay Gordon-McCusker, cabinet member for transport, infrastructure and regeneration, said: “We have installed a pelican crossing at the Longton Hall Road junction of Blurton Road along with traffic calming measures and have carried out local road re-surfacing. This scheme is designed to make travel safer for all road users, particularly pedestrians.”
