Midleton locals say they’re ‘absolutely gutted’ as another much-loved restaurant is shutting down – the latest in a series of closures in East Cork’s biggest town.
The owner of San Marco’s on Main Street has announced the pizzeria will be closing next month and are reducing their hours for the rest of January.
The Italian family restaurant has been a popular spot for almost fifteen years, with a menu of authentic Italian dishes cooked in traditional wood-burning ovens and complete with Venetian-themed decor.
In a touching social media post, the owner of the loved pizza shop thanked customers and staff for their “loyalty and custom” over the years and said the last 15 years of business have been a “pleasure.”
The post reads: “Unfortunately after almost 15 years in business Pizzeria San Marco will finally close its doors. For the rest of January we will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 16:00. I wish to thank all of our wonderful customers and staff for their loyalty and custom over the years – it was a pleasure serving you all.”
Many customers sent their well-wishes with fans of San Marcos left “absolutely gutted” to hear the town is losing another restaurant.
One upset customer wrote: “Not cool. What is happening to Midleton! Another great business gone! Best pizza by a country mile”. Another added: “Very sad day for Midleton another closure”.
This news comes following a number of closures in Midleton last year including Roastie Restaurant, La Trattoria and Sage which all shut their doors in recent months.
Closures are affecting the county with a number of restaurants and bars already announcing changes for 2025. Just this morning, CorkBeo reported on Douglas’ popular East Village bar and restaurant closing its doors after 20 years.
