Ireland is gradually thawing out after a harsh Arctic blast saw temperatures drop to -8C, resulting in a landscape blanketed with snow, ice and frost. However, Irish holidaymakers seeking warmer climes in Spain have been met with an unexpected cold snap there as well.
Spain’s AEMET has issued numerous weather warnings as temperatures plummet, even reaching a freezing -12C in some areas, with widespread frost affecting many regions.
In their most recent update today, Spain’s weather experts announced: “We are facing the coldest morning of the winter so far. Widespread frost inland, and even in coastal areas of the northern peninsula. -12C in Cuellar (Segovia), -11C in Molina de Aragon (Guadalajara), -10C in Teruel and 0C in Barcelona/airport.”
AEMET also warned that the westernmost parts of the country would feel the harshest cold today, with most interior areas seeing persistent frost, aside from some western portions of Andalusia.
The chill is set to stick around for a bit, with the mercury staying stubbornly low and well under what’s usual for this time of year. If you’re planning a getaway, take note – Status Yellow warnings for minimum temperature are out for some top holiday spots tomorrow.
Madrid, Girona, and Barcelona will be shivering at -6C, while Alicante, Murcia, Tarragona, and Granada will be bracing at -4C. For the full rundown on weather alerts, check out AEMET’s website, reports the Irish Mirror.
This unexpected freeze is bound to surprise many, especially those from Ireland who fled the cold only to find themselves in a winter wonderland instead of soaking up the sun. Anyone jetting off to Spain soon should pack their warmest gear, get ready for tricky conditions, and keep an eye out for any travel hiccups.
