Irish Airports different new liquids rule changes clearing up fliers confusion

Confusion over carry-on liquid regulations at Dublin Airport has been rife recently with passengers scratching their heads about what is and isn’t allowed past security gates.

The EU recently introduced some temporary tweaks to airport rules that kicked in from 1 September 2024.

It has meant that airports across Ireland have had to clarify their rules for passengers in regards to liquid restrictions.

These rules vary from each airport and terminal, so passengers are recommended to check the restrictions before they travel.

Ireland West Airport

At the moment, Knock Airport has retained these rules. Clarifying their rules, the airport said: “From September 1st, 2024, changes to EU regulation will see the re-introduction of temporary liquid restrictions at airports in the EU.

“In compliance with the new European Commission directive for EU airports, from the 1st of September, passengers will not be permitted to carry liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) in containers greater than 100ml in their cabin baggage through security at the airport. All liquid, aerosol and gels (LAGs) must be stored in containers of 100ml or less and stored in clear transparent bags and taken out of your cabin baggage before going through security. There will be no limit on the number of plastic bags used per passenger.

“Exceptions remain in place for essential items over 100ml such as baby products, special dietary needs and medications, which also must be placed in a clear transparent bag, separate to the liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs). However, these new guidelines do not affect electronics items, such as laptops and phones which can remain in your cabin baggage when going through security at Ireland West Airport.”

Shannon Airport

Shannon Airport said: “All liquid, aerosol and gels must be stored in containers of 100ml or less. At Shannon Airport you do not need to place your 100ml liquids in plastic bags or remove them from your cabin baggage.”

There are two exceptions to the rules:• Baby food needed during the flight.• Medicines needed during the flight.

Hand-luggage liquid rules – at a glance• As of the 1st September 2024, you can only take liquids, gels, lotions and cosmetics in containers of no more than 100 millilitres in size through the passenger security point at all EU airports.• At Shannon Airport you will not need to place your 100ml liquids in plastic bags or remove them from your cabin baggage.

Dublin Airport

Meanwhile, Dublin Airport has now clarified that “for passengers travelling through both terminals at Dublin Airport, these changes mean all departing passengers must be prepared to remove all liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) from their hand luggage prior to screening, with all LAGs to be under 100mls”. The specifics may vary slightly depending on your departure terminal.

In Terminal 1, keep your liquids under 100mls, pop them into a transparent 1 litre bag (20cm x 20cm), and lay it out in the security tray. Remember, you’re only allowed one of these bags per person. And don’t forget to take out any big electronic devices like laptops and tablets from your bags and place them in the tray too.

Over in Terminal 2, the same liquid rules apply, but there’s no cap on the number of clear bags or 100ml containers you can carry. Plus, you can leave your electronics packed away in your hand luggage, reports RSVP Live.

In Dublin Terminal 1:

  • All liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) in hand luggage must be under 100mls.
  • All LAGs must fit inside one clear 1 litre bag.
  • Only one bag is permitted per passenger.
