Ireland snow end date as eight areas worst to come after new Met Eireann double warning

The date marking the end of snow in Ireland has been pinpointed by weather experts this week as people are urged to ‘take caution’ amid ice warnings.

The past few days have seen a huge temperature drop in Ireland as several areas across the country see several inches of snow and frost.

Met Eireann recently issued a double yellow weather warning for Ireland, with snow and ice forecast as well as ‘widespread frost, ice and lying snow’.

The forecast has pinpointed Friday as the day we should start to see the temperatures creep up past freezing again. Before the weekend, we should get average temperatures back up to around 6 degrees in parts – but not until after the coldest drop in temperature yet.

While it’s been days in the ice box, the mercury is expected to drop to the coldest level yet this week with Met Eireann warning of a teeth-chattering -8 degrees in parts as both Tuesday and Wednesday night brings more wintry showers and widespread icy conditions.

It means that some of us will see temperatures drop twice as cold in the coming days, with some parts even expected to get some temperatures even colder than that on a local level.

While the worst of the snow is over and the Status Orange warnings have expired after a weekend of severe snow and freezing rain, Ireland is on a nationwide Status Yellow Low Temperature warning until midday on Thursday as “very cold nights” bring hazardous travelling conditions, icy patches and travel disruption.

Meanwhile people have been warned over ‘treacherous’ road conditions and temperatures slipping to below freezing in the next 48 hours.

Ireland Weather Channel said in an update on Monday: “Treacherous road conditions are being reported across the country this morning with overnight temperatures dipping to -3 degrees Celsius in some areas and with a widespread frost with ice and snow remaining on many roads this morning.

“The situation is particularly bad where we have had heavy snow since yesterday with Tipperary, Limerick, Kerry, North Cork, Laois, Offaly, Carlow and Kilkenny being the worst impacted. However, icy roads are a problem right across the country.

“Weather wise there’s a band of heavy rain, sleet and snow lying across the west of the country giving some falls of sleet and snow especially over high ground. These showers will turn increasingly to snow tonight with a more general band expected after 8pm which could lead to light snow.

“Temperatures overnight tonight wild get down to -4 to -5 degrees Celsius with severe ice on roads again becoming a major issue for motorists. We urge you to drive with caution and to allow extra time for your journeys throughout the country as the roads will be treacherous once again.”
