Inside Newcastle’s Grainger Market as £9m renovation works continue

As 2025 begins, the next phase of restoration works at Newcastle’s Grainger Market is getting under way.

Newcastle City Council and contractors Robertson began the long-awaited upgrades to the Georgian market building last year. The £9 million programme will include new flooring, doors, seats, and signage installed throughout the historic site and part of it turned into a cultural space capable of hosting gigs and plays.

Old units in the centre of the market arcade have now been demolished, with popular traders Pumphrey’s Coffee and Hunter’s Deli moved to new locations, and shoppers will have noticed that a large section of that area is currently cordoned off. Next on the list will be an overhaul of the market’s toilets, which have closed this week ahead of new lighting, heating, and tiles being installed.

Work is also due to begin in the middle of January to infill the hidden tunnels beneath the market, which were used as air raid shelters during the Second World War. Take a look through the pictures below to see how the restoration is progressing and how the Grainger Market should look once the scheme is complete.
