While some parts of Cork only saw a few flakes, Lisgriffin locals found themselves snowed in and had to be saved by a few friendly farmers.
Visual artist Orla O’Regan and her family set off from Mallow in their converted bus to visit her family in Lisgriffin. She promised her kids they would see some snow but ended up getting stuck there for over 24 hours. Despite the delays, Orla said that she loved the unusual experience.
Speaking to CorkBeo, she said: “We headed off in the bus and all was going well until we reached the first of three hills. The bus started skidding, so we took off on foot, carried what we could, and climbed up the hills.
“There were cars stranded on the road and the snow was impassable. We came across some farmers who were clearing away the fallen trees and debris with tractors and other equipment. There was fierce excitement.
“In these situations, people are so dependent on the farmers to help out. The isolated rural areas can be completely forgotten about, everything was at a standstill.
“It was wonderful to see the humanity in people.”
She added that when they eventually reached her sisters house, the electricity was out, “we had to trudge up to my parents house for some hot water.
“It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
