A Garda investigation is underway after the country’s oldest jewellers was targetted in an attempted break-in during the festive season.
Dillon’s on Quay Street, a family owned business which has been making Claddagh rings since 1750, had one of its windows shattered by two men in the early hours of St. Stephen’s Day.
A Garda spokesperson stated: “Gardaí received a report of an incident of criminal damage that occurred to a premises on Quay Street, Galway City at approximately 12:30am on the 26th of December 2024.”
“Investigations are ongoing at this time.” It’s believed that one of the suspects wore a black covering to hide his face.

Thomas Dillon’s has been in business for 275 years. West of Grafton Street Ltd. or West Jewellers was considered the oldest European jewellery store and one of the oldest companies in Ireland until it closed in 2010.
It’s now believed that Dillon’s has the crown. The business is the only jewellers that has the right to have “ORIGINAL” stamped on their Claddagh rings.
In close to three centuries in business, Dillon’s has sold Claddagh rings to members of the British Royal Family, John F. Kennedy, John Wayne, Walt Disney, Maureen O’Hara and Mia Farrow.

In other Garda news, a man was arrested in Tuam after an intense ordeal lasting several minutes in which he threatened and was restrained by several staff of a popular local pub.
The incident on Saturday 28 December resulted in a man in his 20s being held down on the footpath outside the pub after a heated altercation with bouncers.
A four minute long video seen by Galway Beo, taken by a bystander across the road from the premises, shows a man attempting to get past two staff members in the doorway of the pub.
He is speaking loudly and pointing at a third staff member who is further in the doorway while attempting to push the arms of the other staff out of the way as they try to block him from moving any closer.
