When you’re in a pinch for dinner or lunch, and fancy something from a restaurant or cafe but don’t want to splash the cash – there is an amazing app that offers you great food at a very reasonable price. I saw a Too Good To Go bag available from the Harvester near me – and decided to give it a shot.
Too Good To Go is a service with a mobile application that connects customers to restaurants and stores that have surplus unsold food. The service covers major European cities, and in October 2020 started operations in North America.
This means that by hopping onto a handy little app, you get a surprise amount and variation of food from lots of your favourite high street food stores. It is also often very very cheap.

The Brentwood Golden Fleece Harvester takes part in the Too Good To Go scheme, and last night I was scrolling through the app and saw what I thought was a typo. The Harvester had a salad bar surprise bag on sale for just £2.99 – and I was curious as to how much, and how good, food you can get for less than a Tesco meal deal.
Harvester describes their bag as: “Rescue delicious boxes of deli items from Harvester’s iconic salad bar, with delicious dressings, toppings and bread rolls”. Intrigued, I drove down to my local Harvester to see how good it really was.
The tubs of food were HUGE

The staff were firstly amazing, and had packaged up the food in these great little tubs with lids, which I presume is to keep the salad fresh for as long as possible. I had two HUGE tubs of food, and a little brown bag too, and headed home to see what I’d got!
In the first tub, there was a generous serving of tomato pasta, complete with Harvester’s famous bacon bits (yum), with a spoonful of coleslaw and some pineapple. I thought the pineapple was a bit of a strange touch, but having eaten it, it was almost like having pineapple on pizza.
In the second tub, there was a serving of a very generic salad. There were croutons, onions, cucumber, a mix of beans, carrot, sweetcorn and more… once again all topped with bacon bits.
In my little brown bag there were 4 rolls, two white and two seeded, which I was impressed with how fresh they were. What I want to state is how big these tubs were – there was easily two meals worth of food in my surprise bag, and the quality of it was fantastic.
Obviously, the catch with Too Good To Go is that it is a surprise what you get, so you run the risk of having something you don’t like. However, for £3, I got a decent variety of both fresh and yummy food, in a big quantity.
So if you are running a bit low on cash this January, or want to try out a new cafe without spending too much money, Too Good To Go is definitely a great way to go!
