‘I took wrong dog home from park – I was mortified when I made baffling discovery’

A man has shared his embarrassment after taking the wrong dog home from the park – causing the other owner to panic. He explained how he took his golden retriever, Max, out for a walk and stopped off at the park to let the pooch run around off leash for a while.

While Max was playing with the other dogs in the park, the man started making small talk with other owners to help pass the time while their dogs tired themselves out. Taking to Reddit, he said: “He’s a social butterfly so I let him off-leash to run around with the other dogs. When it was time to go, I spotted him by the water bowl, called him out, and he happily trotted up. I leashed him, said bye to a few dog park regulars, and headed home.”

But it wasn’t until he got inside that he realised Max wasn’t acting quite like himself. He added: “I realised this wasn’t Max. The dog I brought home looked almost identical but was a bit too hyper and had a weird fascination with my cat, which Max usually ignored. After a brief moment of panic, I checked the tag – and yep, totally different dog.”

With that, he rushed back to the dog park with ‘fake Max’ in search for his dog, hoping he would be safe with the other owner. “Turns out, his owner had already noticed the switch and was frantically looking around the park. We had a good laugh about it once we sorted it out.”

Commenting on his post, one shocked user said: “I have joked for years that, as much as I adore goldens, you could swap two of them between their owners and they wouldn’t even notice. you have no idea how vindicated this post makes me feel for the times people say that isn’t true.

Another user added: “I do know someone with a similar story. But it was a dog mom who it had happened with. She dropped her little Shih Tzu off at the groomers, and took the wrong one home. To be fair, the dog had undergone a full puppy cut, coming from a full blown long haired beast.

“And it was the groomer who had handed her the dog. And it wasn’t until she got home when she noticed the mix up. In the meantime her actual dog had been picked up by the other Shih Tzu owner. My friend felt so bad and so guilty about it. I would too, but yes it happens!”

A third user said: “We have a black-and-white tuxedo cat, and the neighbourhood has probably 15 black-and-white tuxedo cats. When we first got our cat, my husband would chase all the tuxedo cats around, trying to get them to come to him thinking they were our cat. Me and my daughter would laugh like hell.”
