A woman with one ovary who was told she had a “less than one per cent” chance of getting pregnant while on the contraceptive coil was left astounded to find out she was expecting twins.
Lindsay, 43, experienced unexpected bleeding during a demanding 13-hour shift as a trainee nursing associate and feared the worst due to her medical history; she’d had an ovarian tumour the previous year which led to the removal of her fallopian tube and ovary.
Worried that her tumour might have returned, the mum-of-five quickly sought help from colleagues in the A&E department for a scan, only to be “totally shocked” by the discovery that she was five months into a twin pregnancy despite using the coil.
Lindsey then had to tell her partner, Joe, 47, an HGV driver, who she began dating a year before. Both parents had older children from their previous relationships – Lindsay is mother to three girls, aged 20, 19, and 17, while Joe has three sons aged 28, 21, and 18.
Despite not planning to expand their family, the unexpected news delighted the couple when they welcomed their ‘miracle’ twins, Eloise and Eddie, into the world on December 12, 2023, at 9.59am and 10.01am, weighing 5lbs 5 oz and 5lbs 11oz respectively.
Reflecting on her incredible journey, Lindsay expressed her joy: “They really are little miracles. They’re doing really well – they’re so healthy and happy, which is a relief considering I hadn’t taken the best care of myself for most of the pregnancy because I had no idea.
“It was such a shock, it never occurred to me that I could be pregnant. I’m really enjoying motherhood as an older mum – I feel more laid back.”
Lindsay was “going through a difficult time” in July 2021, when her marriage of 20 years ended. Just a few months later, she began suffering from heavy bleeding, pain, and fatigue, leading to the discovery of an ovarian tumour – her second one after having had a similar tumour removed in 2019. She underwent surgery to remove her fallopian tube and ovary.

In September 2022, life took a turn when Lindsay met Joe, her current partner, through friends. The couple agreed they did not want children and looked forward to holidays and enjoying their time together.
However, after just a year, Lindsay was surprised to find out she was pregnant. She recalled the moment she broke the news to Joe: “I didn’t want to tell Joe over the phone, so I asked him to meet me at the hospital.
“He sat down, and when I told him, the colour literally drained from his face. He went grey and was nearly sick.”
She added, “Of course he came around – it was just such a shock because he wasn’t expecting more kids at his age!”
Lindsay, who was 43 at the time, only became aware of her pregnancy during the last three months, which she found to be “hard going”. She was astonished to discover she was so far along without having experienced any symptoms.

Lindsay, having suffered two miscarriages previously, underwent a cervical stitch procedure to prevent early labour and keep the twins from a premature birth. After being on bed rest for two months, she welcomed her “miracle babies” at Hull Royal Infirmary on 12 December 2023.
She shared, “My delivery was better than I expected – I had a scheduled c-section so everything was planned. The recovery was hard, but Joe was amazing and so supportive.”
“My older daughters have been brilliant, it’s like having little mothers around to help out. The twins are doing so well, they’re both so healthy and happy.
“I’m really happy, it’s like a dream. I’m very tired but I wouldn’t change a thing!”
