Hull City was beaten on penalties by Doncaster Rovers as their awful season reached a new low at the MKM Stadium, being knocked out of the FA Cup at the third round stage again.
The League Two side took their chance seven minutes into the second half when Ryan Giles did not cover himself in glory, allowing Luke Molyneux to take the ball off him and slot into the bottom corner.
City rallied and scored a well-made equalise when Mason Burstow’s shot hit the post but fell kindly to Gustavo Puerta to turn in the equaliser from close range to take the game into extra-time, and Harry Clifton’s kick won it after Mason Burstow and Alfie Jones failed to score.
Here’s how Tigers reporter Barry Cooper rated the players in the third round of the FA Cup against South Yorkshire opposition….
Carl Rushworth: After a heck of a wait, a Tigers debut for the Brighton stopper. Didn’t have a save to make in the first half, but looked composed on the ball. Made a vital stop just after the equaliser. Saved in the shootout – and was booked. 6.5/10
Ryan Giles: Back in the starting XI and looked decent going forward, delivering a couple of really enticing crosses. Booked in the second half. Not sure what he was doing for the goal, awful defending. and was taken off shortly after. 5/10
Fin Burns: His first start since the defeat to Sheffield United in September. Took a shot into the head which rocked him for much of the half. A shame for him that he had to come off on a rare appearance. 6/10
Sean McLoughlin: A steady enough half with little in the way of drama and that continued. Solid and dependable for the most part. S,lotted away his penalty nicely. 6/10
Cody Drameh: Gave the ball away from the kick-off but recovered and was decent enough in what was a below-par team display. 6/10
Steven Alzate: Neat and tidy in the middle of the park on what was not the easiest playing surface. Another good 45 minutes in his legs before coming off at the break. 6.5/10
Regan Slater: Skipper for the day in place of Lewie Coyle. Started slowly with a couple of sloppy passes but combined nicely with Kamara for a good chance. Good penalty. 6/10
Gustavo Puerta: Looked really bright early on and came close when his angled effort just flew over the bar. Turned in a precious equaliser. 6/10
Harry Vaughan: A first start since the cup replay defeat at Birmingham City 12 months ago and showed plenty of nice touches and no lack of industry on the ball. 6.5/10
Abu Kamara: Had City’s first effort on target with a scrambled volley and should have put them in front when he guided wide at the end of the first half. Hauled down after rounding the goalkeeper at 1-1. 6/10
Joao Pedro: Worked hard in the first half without little reward in the top half of the pitch. Cleverley teed up Kamara who has hacked down by the goalkeeper. Calmly scored his penalty. 6/10
Subs:
Alfie Jones (for Burns 46): Came on at the break and did what he needed to do without any real fuss. Saw his sudden death kick saved. 6/10
Xavier Simons (for Alzate 46): Started well with a couple of important interceptions at the start of the half. 6/10
Lewie Coyle (for Giles 61): Had a glorious chance to win the game in normal time but skied his close-range effort. Scored his penalty well. 6/10
Mason Burstow (for Vaughan 61): His shot came back off the post which saw Puerta tuck in the rebound to level it. Blazed his chance to win the game over. 6/10
