Huge new furniture warehouse to be built in Lancashire town

Councilllors have given the go-ahead for a leading East Lancashire-based office furniture manufacturer to replace a warehouse at its Blackburn site with a larger one.

On Thursday evening the Altham-based Senator International Group was given permission by Blackburn with Darwen Council’s planning committee for the new building on Whitebirk’s Premier Business Park in Croft Head Road.

It approved the scheme with 20 conditions despite an objection from a nearby resident concerned about late night lighting from the site. The development will deliver an ancillary storage unit to serve Senator Engineering which currently operates from the site.

The scheme also involves other external works to parking and road markings within the site, as well as additional soft landscaping and tree planting. A report to councillors by planning manager Gavin Prescott said: “The proposed development will deliver additional floorspace to this well-established industrial use and should help to secure the longevity of the current company at this site.

“The proposed unit will be used to accompany the existing manufacturing operations undertaken in the main building by virtue of creating a more fit for purpose and larger storage area with high bay racking for products made.”

Blackburn with Darwen Council growth boss Cllr Quesir Mahmood said: “This is a perfectly sensible proposal.” His Tory counterpart Cllr Paul Marrow said: “It’s very straightforward.”

The new warehouse will replace an existing outbuilding and tank positioned at north-west corner of the site/ A new layout will increase the amount off-street parking spaces by 19 to 66 overall.
