Huge fire at Scots restaurant as emergency services race to scene

A huge blaze has broken out at a building in East Kilbride, with emergency crews racing to get it under control.

The alarm was raised on Wednesday, January 15, with four fire appliances sent to the scene at Westwood Square in the South Lanarkshire town.

The fire is believed to be within a restaurant.

The neighbouring road was closed for around three hours to allow firefighters to battle the blaze. Police confirmed it had been reopened just before 8pm.

Footage taken by an onlooker shows the fire taking hold, seemingly before emergency services arrived.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were notified of the blaze at 17.21, and mobilised four appliances to the scene. Crews left at 19.07 after ensuring the area was safe. Police Scotland were also in attendance.

Video shows the flames getting stronger and ripping through the building as clouds of thick smoke billow into the sky.

In a statement shared to social media, Police Scotland said: “Around 5.30pm on Wednesday, 15 January, 2025, we received a report of a fire at Westwood Square, East Kilbride.

“Emergency services are in attendance. Redcliffe Drive is currently closed. Motorists are asked to find alternative routes.”
