With Christmas over and done with in a flash, many of us will now be getting ready to ring in 2025 with our nearest and dearest.
Those who aren’t staying at home to enjoy a takeaway and stay up late to watch Big Ben strike midnight may be planning on attending a house party or braving the crowds and hitting the pubs and clubs – and will more than likely be using a taxi to get home in the wee hours.
However, it’s important to note that taxi companies generally charge more over the festive period – but the answer depends on where you are going, the time you are travelling, and whether you get a Hackney Carriage (or “black cab”) or pre-book a private-hire vehicle.
Hackney Carriages cannot set their own fees, but must charge in line with the local authority’s rules, while pre-booked taxis may set a higher fee depending on the time of travel.
Standard rate in North East Lincolnshire for New Year’s Eve
In North East Lincolnshire, the local authority states that from 6pm onwards on New Year’s Eve and through New Year’s Day, right up until 6am the following day, the starting rate – or “flag” – will be £3.50, with the price then increasing to £6.30 for the first mile. Each mile thereafter will cost £2.90.
For example, a trip from Cleethorpes High Street to Grimsby town centre and vice versa should cost around £12. A trip from Cleethorpes High Street to Scartho should cost around £15.
Private-hire vehicles
Private-hire vehicles may charge slightly more than the local authority’s standard rate for New Year’s Eve, so you may need to check the rate with the taxi firm you are planning to travel with.
