Holyhead Port issues update as work continues to reopen terminals

Bosses at Holyhead Port have issued an update on progress to reopen storm-damaged facilities. Haulage companies had been desperate for clarity at one of Britain’s busiest ports.

Operations at the Anglesey site came to a standstill following damaged caused during Storm Darragh. The closure caused major sea route disruption between North Wales and Dublin in the Republic of Ireland.

The port was not expected to reopen “until January 15 at the earliest” and, given the scale of the damage, it was feared the facility port could be closed until at least March. But in a statement issued today (Monday, December 30), port operator Stena Line said that the Terminal 5 berth should be reopened by Thursday, January 16. However a timeline for for the damaged Terminal 3 berth, used by Irish Ferries, has not yet been given.

Holyhead Port – where Stena Line is the port authority – said: “We are pleased to share a positive update regarding the ongoing closure of the Terminal 3 and Terminal 5 ferry berths at Holyhead Port. After diligent assessments and planning, we can now confirm that the timeline for reopening the Terminal 5 ferry berth by 16th January 2025 remains achievable.

“This prediction is subject to reasonable weather conditions, and we will provide further updates as our progress continues.”

The statement added: “Our team have worked tirelessly over the festive season and throughout periods of severe weather to address the challenges presented by the structural damage sustained earlier this month. We are confident in the alternative solutions we have implemented to ensure safe and seamless access to vessels for both our customers and staff. “The safety of our passengers and colleagues remains our top priority. We will continue to prioritise rigorous assessments and repair work to ensure that the berths meet the highest safety standards before reopening. We deeply appreciate the patience and understanding of all those impacted by this closure.”

Drone videos and images have shown the scale of the damage at the port. During Storm Darragh, a ‘dolphin’ platform fell into the sea, which had a knock-on impact on the adjourning terminal used by Stena Line. Get the best island stories from our Anglesey newsletter – sent every Friday
