Hogmanay road death toll rises to three as woman, 26, killed in Fife horror crash

Police Scotland have revealed details of a third fatal road accident on December 31, taking the Hogmanay death toll on Scotland’s roads to three.

It followed a crash involving a BMW car, a Mercedes Sprinter van and a Ford Focus on Standing Stane Road, near Windygates in Fife, at around 1pm. Tragically, the driver of the BMW, a 26-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her passenger, a 22-year-old man, and the driver of the van, a 46-year-old man were taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee for treatment. A 62-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man from the third vehicle were taken to Victoria hospital in Kirkcaldy for treatment and later released.

As we reported earlier, a 70-year-old woman was killed in Paisley in a ‘hit and run’ incident after she was struck at around 7pm by a white car on the town’s Barrhead Road.

The driver failed to stop and a major police investigation is now underway to trace the car and its occupants. Just minutes later, at around 7.30pm, a 53-year-old man was killed when his car crashed on the A83 near Tarbert in Argyll and Bute.

Following the Fife crash, Inspector James Henry said: “Our thoughts are with the families of all those involved.” Standing Stane Road was closed for collision investigation and opened at 8am on New Year’s Day.
